Julia attended a workshop I presented in Texas many years ago. She was already a “visual strategies believer” and I think that conference put some extra zing into her enthusiasm. She contacts me from time to time to share her experiences. This letter was in my morning inbox.
PLEASE…….forward this to the Queen of Visual Strategies herself, Miz Hodgdon!!!!!
It is so exciting to me to be kept on your “newsletter list” after ALL these years.
Each newsletter has something NEW or VALIDATING for me to read.
I have been retired for 17 years and still “think” Visual Strategies every day.
Each new grandchild offers me the opportunity to begin VS again and again.
I doubt that you still remember me….but I was the one in the workshop with your book “all marked/dog-eared up” and you said:
“This girl has the MOST used VISUAL STRATEGIES book that I have ever seen”…… Quite a compliment to me!!!!
Now comes the vacuum cleaner newsletter.
So profoundly accurate…..It was a delight and an eye-opener for the use of VS.
I pulled my Visual Strategies book (Visual Strategies for Improving Communication) off the shelf and went down memory lane. I had used student’s initials on almost every page to remind me of “WHO” needed “WHAT” on each page.
I had sent that book to each family with the page numbers I wanted them to read….hoping they would read OTHER pages, also……
I had glued a “Top Ten Page Numbers” list inside the back cover and shared that list with teachers at every workshop I presented.
Reading back through that book this morning…..I realized I would NEVER have been “Teacher of the Year” without that book.
That book WAS my teaching career. Everything I ever did was based on that book.
25ish years later…that is still the ONLY book I would ever need to teach the children I taught.
Every idea/thought/suggestion is equally current in 2018 and will continue to be in 2080.
As long as we have children/adults with communication challenges…..we need this book.
These strategies should be in every nursing home/assisted living/skilled nursing facility in the world.
(The strategies are particularly helpful with husbands……)
My story is familiar to everyone on your mailing list.
I speak for EVERYONE who has ever used your book when I say….”your book changed my life”….
But that statement is “incidental” to this statement:
“That book changed the lives of the children and FAMILIES I touched”.
Thank you for that.
I want you and the world to know the importance of this book.
Thanks for writing Julia. I love your enthusiasm and there’s no way I would forget you!
I’ve been preaching the “Visual Strategies message” for 40 years and I love to hear the success stories. But I also know that there are people who haven’t heard the message yet. That keeps me going.
P.S. Do YOU have a success story? Please share. . .
